This was all written except for a nice melody. So it sat for several months with me occasionally noodling something and immediately hating it.

I finally hit on the flute melody.

Fun Fact : There are 4 different Piano VSTs used plus a Wurlitzer.

This started life as a submission to the Weekly Music Challenge called “Upside Down”. All of the chords are built “upside down” - voiced as 5-3-1 . Otherwise, it is a pretty standard “Axis Progression” song.

The name “Capital Idea” is meant to evoke the feeling you get when an idea not only seems good, but actually turns out to BE good.

This is one of those random experiments that worked out. What happens if I run a cello through an echo, a reverb, and a distortion effect?

This was actually a commissioned piece I wrote to be the background music for a short social justice video. It was originally written in early 2021 and was one of the earliest full tracks that I created.

The original mix was quite hollow with the mid frequencies left uncovered for the voice-over. I decided to remix and add a few fillers and release as a stand-alone track.

At the time I wrote this, I was spending a lot of time hiking and running in the state forest near my house. It was written to reflect the feeling of being in the woods.

I had just spent a fair amount of time listening to Thomas Bergersen’s 2014 album Sun and I wanted to do something similar.

One of my personal favorites. I wanted to make a full-on ambient track, so I did.

This is one of the first I made in Reaper as I was switching over from Ableton Live.

This was inspired by a Pigments softsynth preset. Messing with it, I noticed that it sounded like an upright bass in the lower octaves. The opening minute or so of the track is nothing but that preset and percussion.

I always imagine this track as the opening theme for a TV drama.

Not sure where my head was when I wrote this. Definitely different.

The drum pattern started out as a pretty straight ahead 4 pattern. The song was pretty boring. I offset the kick by a 16th note every now and then and it was much better. But then I had to figure out how to make the bass fit into the new groove. And then the other rhythm instruments also had to follow suit.

What makes this track for me is the interplay between the lead synth and the bass.
